▶ BASIC BACKGROUND

Returning home early, Ren witnessed a drunken man assaulting a woman and and chose to butt in before things escalated to protect her. However, the man was a shady politician that had his hands in pretty much most of the police and juridical force and country.
For choosing to help her, Ren was essentially condemned as the perpetrator and the man, Shido, was presented as the hero who had protected her. Because he was now known as an assaulter, Ren was removed from his school, and shipped to Tokyo to live with a connection of his parents so he could attend the only one that would accept him (with massive threats they'd throw him out of he tried anything funny). A mysterious app kept appearing on his phone like an annoying popup that never went again and visions of a bluish Velvet Jail that said he was a prisoner that needed reconditioning.
To make the long story short, the application WAS MAGIC and allowed him to step into the metaverse and enter certain people's "palaces" if he had the right keywords to see their distorted desires laid bare in the purest form of overblown self-worth. He met his first friend, Ryuji, a short while before the application activates, sending them into the metaverse of one of their teacher who thinks himself a king (so the school became a castle - sometimes it's very literal). After being captured by the guards, the thread of his new friend's life being cut short awakened a voice inside him that asks him if his previous decision was a mistake. Solidifying it wasn't, he forges a contract with his Persona - Arsene and awakens his powers as a Phantom Thief. Along with a swag new look, he also gains the ability to use spells from his Persona's abilities. Later on, Ren learns that he is a 'wild card' that is a person who is able to use multiple Personas and not just one. He also gains the guidance of Morgana, a creature that claims to be a human who was turned into a cat-like creature (that looks like a cat in the 'real' world) who guides and aids him in his new duties as the Phantom Thieves' leader.
This sets off a sort of domino effect, as they find out defeating a palace ruler can causes changes of hearts- effectively making the guilty admit of their crimes and the terrible things they had done. In the teacher's case, admitting of all the wrongdoings he'd been doing the volleyball team (and the girls especially). As this continued, Ren gained more friends along the way who also became Phantom Thieves, as they in turn awakened to their own Personas. All the time, Ren made connections - Confidants which provide him with skills and abilities that work both in and out of the metaverse, one among them Goro Akechi, a popular detective who thinks what the Phantom Thieves are doing is wrong. Like polar opposites of each other, they become rivals of sorts. After one of their heists goes wrong and a teammate's father dies on live television, the Phantom Thieves are declared a true public menace. After Akechi proves them that he knows they are the Phantom Thieves, they agree to one last heists to prove their wrongdoing, but they are betrayed by him, with Ren being captured, drugged and interviewed.
However the Phantom Thieves had already suspected him, and had set up an entirely dangerous and elaborate plan to make him think he had killed off Ren, which lead them to the true mastermind behind everything, Masayoshi Shido, the very man who Ren had been wronged before. After taking him down, they realize it's not quite over yet. It turned out that humanity was being judged and the true, true mastermind was the god of control Yaldabaoth, who said humans needed to be controlled. Igor, the true owner of the Velvet Room that Ren had been visiting, had captured him and taken the other's place so that he'd 'win' over no matter what.
Fortunately, friendship is magic, they manage to fight off the god of control and Satan saves Christmas. Ren, knowing that the Phantom Thieves need someone to testify to truely bring Shido down, willfully goes to jail, and his friends manage to clear his name for good.
At the end, he leaves with his friends to return home for one last trip together.

▶ PERSONALITY
- Confident
If there's one major trait about Ren, it's that despite any and all obstacles placed before him, he remains confident about his own skills and (most of all) himself and his convictions. This permits him not only to fight efficiently, but he's completely ready to go on full ham if he needs be - Ren is certainly not above making terrible puns...and honestly tends to do so a lot. Even when he takes on a slightly calmer more silent personality, hiding his true rebellion nature, there's an air to him that suggests there's more to him than meets the eye and he's perfectly content with that.
- Rebellious/Defiant
Speaking of rebellious, Ren is very much the 'row row fight the power' type of guy. Well, more like 'punish the shitty adults that deserve it'. When him and his friends obtained the power to go into the metaverse and the ability to change the hearts of people to essentially force them to become better people, he fully took on the role. Ren is the type to look at the safe path, not give a shit about it, and then walk right into the more dangerous one if it promises to be more interesting. He'll stand up to others who threaten him, and will do the same for those that become close to him.
- Kind-Hearted
Continuing the gentleman thief characteristics, Ren's own heart is in the right place. Even if his methods are not exact orthodox and he can be a little shit, in the end he always tries to do the right thing. Even if the right thing is not always the easiest or the most popular, or gets you expelled from your school. He cares deeply about his friends and his family and is more than willing to protect them at all costs, including his own life.
If you make a friend of Ren, you've made a friend for life.
- Over-Confident/Cocky
Someone who catches on to who Ren is may be able to manipulate him and use his confidence against him. An example of this in the game is when the Phantom Thieves become increasingly popular; Ren doesn't really question himself why this is happening and how they are suddenly incredibly well-known. He just takes it as a simple reaction to the public being on his side and what they are doing. Unfortunately this comes crashing in their faces, and they are essentially played and toyed with to grave consequences. Playing against his cocky attitude can work well too.
- Reckless
Going hand-in-hand with the over-confidence is the recklessness that accompanies Ren's actions can put him in serious danger. As mentioned before, he's willing to die for his friend, and will do stupid stunts to keep them safe. At worst, this could lead to terrible things and endangering his own life. Make him believe a friend is in danger and, well, you can easily manipulate him. Just be careful who you're trying to trick. The trickster will not be pleased.

▶ POWERS
POWER 1 -- PHANTOM THIEF
As a Phantom Thief, Ren gains the ability to switch to his Phantom Thief outfit (codename: Joker) with a snap of his fingers (normally, a change this would require being in the Metaverse).
Turning into Joker gives him increased endurance and agility. Attacks that would normally kill or badly harm someone might just be incredibly painful for them (so basically, the difference between bleeding to death from a wind attack, vs feeling like someone punched you really hard in your gut).
He is above average build and strength, enhanced thanks to his Persona skill and his intense workouts over the year of becoming a thief, but Ren's true skill is his inhumane agility. He can almost cartoonishly move from one place to another without being seen, and is the very definition of a gentleman thief, here today, already gone when you show up.
POWER 2 -- WILD CARD PERSONA USER
The Wild Card Ability represents the number zero. In the Persona universe, its infinite possibilities is represented by the arcana Fool (later World or Universe) tarot card, and lets Ren summon his alternate selves (called Personas) made manifest in flesh and magic. In the Persona universe, gods and demons are creations of humans - as long as humans believe in them, they exist. As a result, Personas are those gods and demons made flesh and used as a tool to fight (both good and bad.) As a Wild Card, you could say that Ren is a more powerful version of a normal Persona user, who can usually only manifest their closest alternate self compared to multiple aspects of a user.
To summon a persona, Ren tears off his mask (see his Phantom Thief power) and the persona manifests in blue flames and light. Because of his current timeline placement, Ren will be coming with his Persona, Satanael and it's four innate skills, with the later ones being added during power upgrades later on in the game, if applicable.
The Persona also makes him stronger against the following elements; nuclear, wind, electrical, ice, fire, physical and gun attacks and psy. It also nullifies any 'holy/light' attack and absorbs 'darkness' attacks. These are mostly persona type spells, any non Persona characters that have powers that fall under this umbrella would be discussed how much this want this to work with Satanael (or not).
Heavy Curse: A darkness type attack that causes damage to a user
Megidolaon: An 'alimighty' attack, which is something in the Personaverse that is so powerful that no Persona can block it.
Survival Trick: Allows Ren to su
rvive an attack that would normally kill him, but leave him on the edge of death. Riot Gun: It's a powerful attack. With a gun.
POWER 3 -- THIRD EYE
This is something that 'Igor' (Yaldabaoth) granted him, but it has been changed for MoM a little. Usable both as a PT and not, it is activated when Ren places his hand on his forehead and just has to think about it. BAM instant color-coded vision that makes him able to do his Phantom Thieving a lot easier.
Copied from the wiki;
- Stealable items gain a yellow glow / MoM modification: This allows him to see things he could steal as a PT, or special items someone might be hiding (with the other player's permission).
- Intractable places like gaps and ledges have exclamation marks over them. / MoM modification: Same thing
- Overworld shadows gain a glowing outline that depends on how threatening they are. Hardest ones gain a red outline, medium ones gain a yellow one and the least dangerous encounters glow with a blue color. / MoM modification: This would be a way to gauge how powerful other heroes are instead, fellow heroes might show up as red, normal citizens might show up as blue.
- Third Eye can be used to examine on-screen locations that can be used for daily activities. So for example, his third eye could be used to spot the best fish in a lake and be able to efficiently catch one of the bigger ones, or he could use it to be able to strike with a bat and score a home run.
- When Ren starts to form a friendship with someone, they become a Confident. The Third Eye shows their arcana card above them. This can be used to find them more easily.
